Mapo Tofu 麻婆豆腐


  • 1/2 lb minced beef or pork

  • 1 pack firm tofu

  • 1 onion

  • 4 stalks green onion

  • 1 cup chicken stock

  • 3 cloves garlic

  • 2 tbsp doubanjiang (for sauce)

  • 2 tbsp red chili flakes (for sauce)

  • 1 tbsp ground peppercorn (for sauce)

  • 1 tbsp chili oil (for sauce)

  • 1 tsp corn starch (for sauce)

  • 1 tsp sesame oil (for sauce)


  1. Prepare ingredients - dice onion and slice green onion, cut tofu into cubes, mince garlic

  2. Cook - in a pan, add oil, then fry garlic, onion and green onion until fragrant, add minced meat and cook

  3. Add flavor - add chili oil, ground peppercorns, red chili flakes and doubanjiang

  4. Add tofu & chicken stock - add in cubed tofu and chicken stock, mix carefully, then simmer on low heat for 10-15 minutes

  5. Adjust the flavor - at this point, there should be less liquid, add some corn starch to thicken the sauce a bit, and adjust the flavor with salt & pepper if needed

  6. Serve it up - drizzle with sesame oil and garnish with spring onion, then plate

  7. Enjoy!
