Pepper Lunch ペッパーランチ

Ingredients:

  • 1 pack thinly sliced beef (0.5-1 lbs)

  • 1 cup cooked rice

  • 1 tbsp butter

  • 1/3 cup cooked corn

  • 1-2 stalks green onion

  • salt and pepper

  • 1/2 apple (for sauce)

  • 1/2 onion (for sauce) (note: if I have no other use for the other half of the onion, I like to slice it up and cook it right before I add in the beef)

  • 4 cloves garlic (for sauce)

  • 1 knob ginger (for sauce)

  • 1 tbsp sake (for sauce)

  • 2 tbsp mirin (for sauce)

  • 8 tbsp soy sauce (for sauce)

  • 1 tsp sesame oil (for sauce)

  • 1 tsp roasted sesame seeds (for sauce)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare sauce - in a small saucepot, grate apple, onion, garlic and ginger, then combine with sake, mirin, soy sauce and sesame oil, turn on the heat to medium and simmer for 5 minutes, then add roasted sesame seeds and mix

  2. Cook - in a cast-iron pan or skillet on medium-high heat, melt butter, optionally add in onion slices (see note above) and cook until translucent, then add in beef, seasoning with salt and pepper, make some room in the center to add in the rice (to make a nice mound shape, put rice in a separate bowl, then flip upside down onto the pan)

  3. Serve it up - garnish with some cooked corn, chopped green onion and additional freshly ground pepper

  4. Enjoy!
