Yakiniku Donburi (Japanese BBQ Bowl) 焼き肉丼

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 lb sliced beef

  • 1/2 pack shimeji mushroom

  • 1/2 pack maitake mushroom

  • 1/2 pack enoki mushroom

  • 1/2 onion

  • 1/4 cup homemade yakiniku sauce (see below for recipe, better prepared one day in advance)

  • 1/2 tbsp butter

  • 1 tsp brown sugar

  • green onions (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare ingredients - cut off stems of mushrooms, cut onions into strips

  2. Prepare onions & mushrooms - in a pan, melt butter, then add in onions and cook until translucent, add mushrooms and cook until no longer raw, then add brown sugar to slightly caramelize, optionally add 1 tbsp of yakiniku sauce

  3. Prepare beef - season with salt & pepper on both sides, fry on pan until no longer pink, then add in rest of yakiniku sauce

  4. Serve it up - on a bed of rice, add mix of onion & mushrooms, place pieces of beef on top, and garnish with green onions and extra sesame seeds

  5. Enjoy!

Homemade Yakiniku Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 3 tbsp soy sauce

  • 2 tbsp sake

  • 2 tbsp mirin

  • 1 tsp sugar

  • 1/2 tsp rice vinegar

  • 1/2 tsp miso

  • 1/2 tsp katsuobushi

  • 1 tsp grated garlic

  • 1 tsp grated ginger

  • 1 tsp sesame seeds

Instructions:

  1. Make sauce - in saucepan, add soy sauce, sake, mirin, sugar, rice vinegar, miso, katsuobushi, garlic and ginger, then simmer for 2 minutes

  2. Strain sauce & add sesame seeds - strain the sauce mixture and add sesame seeds

  3. Store - let cool and keep in the refrigerator for up to a month

  4. Enjoy!
